lip fillers

appointment Duration: 60 Minutes

Lip fillers can enhance the shape, size and symmetry of your lips by adding volume to create a more defined lip.

What are lip fillers?

Lip filler also referred to as lip injections, are a non-surgical treatment that restores natural volume loss that occurs with age, smooth lip skin, correct asymmetry, augment shape, or for those who desire to enhance their lips. The most commonly used dermal lip fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a key molecule found in the body involved in skin hydration. This is because HA lip injections can be reversed if required, and provide temporary results which can be maintained long term if desired. Lip injections offer natural-looking volume and an improved lip shape contour without the permanent commitment of cosmetic surgeries or the use of longer-lasting dermal fillers.

Lip filler treatment can achieve several positive outcomes, including:

  • Increase or enhance lip volume
  • Redefine the lip border
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve lip hydration
  • Create an enhanced version of your natural lip contours
  • Produce a firmer, more youthful appearance
  • Correct asymmetry

A consultation with one of our experienced clinicians is required before undergoing any cosmetic treatment. At the consultation, patients will discuss their medical history, concerns they wish to focus on, and their anticipated outcomes of a lip enhancement. This will determine the best course of treatment in terms of products used, the techniques required, and the number of sessions needed to achieve optimal results.

It is recommended that patients avoid vigorous exercise and significant alcohol consumption for 24 hours before treatment to minimise the chance of bruising.

Lip injection treatment is completed during your 60 minute appointment. The lips are cleansed, and a topical numbing cream is applied to minimise any discomfort. Small amounts of dermal lip filler are then injected beneath the skin’s surface of the lips and will occur at regular intervals to ensure an even distribution of the lip filler. The technique used to inject the filler will depend on what areas of the patient’s lips they would like to enhance and improve.

Once completed, the lips will be cleaned, and ice may be applied to reduce any expected swelling. There is minimal downtime required, and you will be able to revert to normal activities afterwards.

Due to how vascular the lips are, swelling is to be expected for the first 24-48 hours. Some bruising and swelling will persist for up to 2 weeks, and your lips may appear much larger than expected initially. However, this is a typical post-treatment experience, and applying ice regularly to the lips will help reduce swelling and bruising. If you experience any discomfort, over the counter pain medication can help.

Applying lip balm can help soothe and moisturise the lips but wearing makeup should be avoided 24 hours post-treatment. It is also recommended that patients avoid exercising for 24-48 hours and saunas, steam rooms, or hot spas, as elevated heart rate and blood pressure can worsen swelling and bruising. It would be best to avoid alcohol consumption for the first few days to help lessen any bruising. It is important to stay hydrated to help with your healing and avoid smoking to minimise the risk of complications.

Small bumps and lumps can be present after treatment which is another common side effect of lip injections as the filler disperses throughout your lip tissue. If lumps or bumps persist after four weeks, you may need to contact our clinic. If you experience any serious bruising or discomfort outside of the lip area, this is a rare reaction and will require immediate consultation with your clinician.

We also advise to self-medicate prophylactic anti-virals before or on the same day as treatment, if you have a known history of HSV-1 herpes simplex virus to the lips (commonly referred to as cold sores). This can be purchased over the counter at a chemist. This is to significantly reduce the chance of developing a cold sore infection following your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get lip fillers?

It is also a suitable option if you want to experience lip enhancement without the permanency, significant downtime, and cost of traditional surgical procedures.

However, lip fillers are not suitable for individuals who:

  • Currently have a cold sore, which will need to fully heal before undergoing treatment
  • Are pregnant for breastfeeding
  • Under the age of 18
  • Have any healing wounds present around the mouth area
  • Have present permanent lip filler
  • Have had or scheduled to have extensive dental work or any surgical procedures in the four weeks prior or following your anticipated appointment
  • Scheduled overseas travel within 2 weeks following treatment
  • Have had recent lip tattooing
How long do lip injections last?

The final lip filler results can be seen four weeks after treatment once the dermal lip filler has fully settled and swelling has completely resided.

Results can last anywhere between 3-12 months. They will vary depending on how fast your body metabolises the hyaluronic acid lip injections and lifestyle choices such as smoking, which can affect longevity, as well as product used. If patients want to prolong their lip enhancement, maintenance treatments can be done as the lip fillers are metabolised, which can noticeably lessen your lip’s volume.

Do lip fillers hurt?

There may be mild discomfort, but the treatment will be much more comfortable if patients opt for a numbing topical cream, which is applied for 30 minutes prior to treatment.

Can I wear lipstick after lip injections?

You will need to wait at the very least eight hours, but optimally 24 hours after treatment before wearing cosmetic lip products. This will help your lips heal by minimizing the chance of infection or scarring. It is essential for several days afterwards to apply lip products with care, resisting excessive pressure to avoid disturbing or moving the lip fillers around.

Are lip fillers permanent?

An enzyme can be injected into the lips to dissolve the filler for whatever reason may be necessary at any time. This is one of the main reasons why lip injections are so popular.
