HYPERHIDROSIS TREATMENT

appointment Duration: 60 Minutes

Hyperhidrosis can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections, this works by stopping the nerve single to the sweat gland, slowing the body’s release of sweat.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating, is a common condition that can severely affect an individual’s quality of life, from mental health and relationships to social and professional interactions. It can often be so debilitating that individuals may avoid leaving the house to prevent potential embarrassment.

For most individuals, sweating is the body’s normal process in regulating temperature when exercising or experiencing hot temperatures where the sweat evaporates from the skin to produce a cooling effect. Hyperhidrosis, however, produces constant sweating in common areas such as the hands, feet, underarms, face, and head. In some cases, hyperhidrosis can occur all over the body, and if individuals exercise or are nervous, the sweating becomes even worse.

Treatment for hyperhidrosis

At Aesthete Sunshine Coast, we offer anti-wrinkle injections as an effective hyperhidrosis treatment. Having already been approved in the US, anti-wrinkle injections have been shown to reduce underarm sweating by up to 87%, making anti-sweat injections one of the best hyperhidrosis treatments available. The treatment involves blocking the chemical responsible for activating your sweat glands. The overactive nerves are essentially paralysed when anti-wrinkle injections are injected into the problem areas, preventing your body from sweating in that area.

Our hyperhidrosis treatment is commonly performed in the underarms area, but other areas such as the feet, hands, and face can also receive anti-sweat injections.

Procedure

The hyperhidrosis treatment will take around 20-30 minutes to complete. A topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand to minimise any discomfort. Your clinician will mark the areas in a grid pattern to map out the injection sites. Anti-wrinkle injections are then injected just below the surface using a fine needle. Depending on the severity and size of the area, 15-25 injections may be needed per area to combat excessive sweating successfully.

Your hyperhidrosis treatment will begin to take effect within a week post-treatment. The results can last up to 6 months and will significantly reduce the amount of sweat your body produces.

Types of hyperhidrosis

There are two different types of hyperhidrosis, which differ depending on the causes and extent of sweating.

  • Primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH) is not caused by other medical conditions or medications. It often occurs as a child or adolescent in particular areas of the body, hence why it is ‘focal’. Individuals with this type of hyperhidrosis have sweating episodes roughly once a week and do not typically sweat while they sleep. Studies have shown that PFH can also be hereditary, but since people with hyperhidrosis are often too afraid to talk about their condition, you may not know that you have inherited it.
  • Secondary generalised hyperhidrosis (SGH) is usually a side effect of medications or caused by other medical conditions. Individuals with SGH tend to sweat across large areas of their bodies, and they may also sweat whilst they sleep. It may be worth speaking to your doctor first if you experience this before undergoing a hyperhidrosis treatment.

Aftercare

Immediately following treatment, you may feel sore or tender around the injection sites for the first 12 hours. Some patients experience tiredness or heaviness of the arms when the underarm area is treated, but this is a typical post-treatment symptom that should resolve within a few days. To ensure your body heals optimally and you achieve satisfying results, patients must follow their aftercare instructions which can include:

  • Do not apply deodorant or antiperspirant until the skin has recovered from the injections, roughly 4-12 hours.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and vitamin E supplements for at least 12 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption for 12 hours.
  • Do not massage or rub the treated area for 24 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous activity and extreme temperatures for at least 24 hours.
  • Do not undergo microdermabrasion, electrolysis, or laser treatments to the treated area for at least one week.

It is vital that patients adhere to their aftercare instructions to ensure they heal fully from the treatment, and the anti-sweat injections work to their fullest extent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hyperhidrosis be cured permanently?

Depending on the type you have, hyperhidrosis cannot be permanently cured using anti-wrinkle injections. It is a treatment designed to prevent and reduce the amount of sweat your body produces and will only remain effective for up to 12 months post-treatment. Some patients find the effects only last around 6 or 10 months, and maintenance treatments may be recommended to prolong the results.

You will need to check your eligibility against these criteria with your doctor before undergoing this hyperhidrosis treatment.
