LIMELIGHT IPL Treatment

appointment Duration:  45 – 60 Minutes

Cutera® LimeLight Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment is the non-invasive approach to skin revitalisation. The LimeLight procedure can help improve skin tone and surface imperfections such as redness, tiny veins and brown spots associated with aging and photodamage.

What is a LimeLight IPL therapy?

LimeLight is a minimally invasive photo-rejuvenative treatment developed by Cutera® designed and manufactured in the USA.  Limelight IPL differs from laser, in that a laser produces just one specific wavelength of light while the Limelight IPL can cover a broad range of wavelengths (from 520nm to 1100nm). This results in an exceptional skin revitalisation treatment with the ability for the therapist to choose three different wavelength spectrums to accurately tailor the treatment to your skin type, and to target either red, brown, or red and brown pigments.

LimeLight is commonly on the Face, Neck, Decolletege, Hands, Arms & Legs.  LimeLight is suitable for skin types 1-111 Fitzpatrick levels for both Male and Females.

What are the benefits of LimeLight IPL therapy?

  • Improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Lighten the appearance of freckles (ephelides), pigmentation and sun damage
  • Improve facial redness and acne scarring
  • Clear the skin and reduce acne lesions
  • Improve skin texture and fine lines
  • Revitalise and freshen your complexion

LimeLight can be used to target the following conditions;

  • Poikiloderma
  • Angiomas
  • Port Wine Stains (PWS)
  • Venous Lakes
  • Lentigines
  • Dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN’s)

The procedure

Your treatment will take approximately 30-60 minutes, depending on the areas you wish to treat.

You will be given a pair of eye shields which must remain on while undergoing treatment.  An ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area which also assists in the pre-cooling process prior to a “shot” being performed.  A series of shots will be performed in a stamping motion across the treatment area.

With each shot you will briefly feel a warm sensation and a slight sting (like a rubber band snap) as the light energy is absorbed by the target. This indicates that the treatment is working.

LimeLight is predominately undertaken as part of a series of treatments to achieve improvements in the appearance and health of your skin. Usually, 2 – 3 treatments, will be sufficient to see results, treatments are spaced at 4-8 week intervals.  Additional treatments may be recommended, especially for excessively sun-damaged skin.

Within one to three weeks, the darkened spots will flake off and fade. Diffuse redness or telangiectasia will decrease, and your mottled complexion will improve.

It is crucial that you follow your aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and to achieve the best results following your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

LimeLight IPL can be experienced as a single treatment, however, its full benefits are achieved if patients undergo a series of treatments as part of their skin plan. Typically, 2-3 treatments may be required to see desired results.

At Aesthete Sunshine Coast we offer package deals of x3 treatment visits at a reduced price for a one off payment.

How long will the results last?

The benefits of LimeLight IPL will become increasingly noticeable after several treatments, with optimal results being seen around the six month period.  LimeLight IPL can provide permanent results but when treating pigment issues, follow up treatments are recommended every 12 months.  Depending on how well protected from the sun and how consistent the home care regimen is, results can last longer than the intended 12 month period.

We only use world leading technoloigies and we are privileged to have highly skilled and trained clinicians who are passionate and committed to helping patients achieve their desired outcomes.  We love working closely with our patients to ensure we achieve great skin results.

Does a LimeLight IPL treatment hurt?

It doesn’t hurt but there is a warm sensation and a slight sting (like a rubber band snap) as the light energy is absorbed by the target. This indicates that the treatment is working. Adjustments can be made to ensure the treatment remains bearable.  Overall, the treatment is non-invasive with very little downtime.

When can I resume normal activities?

Patients may return to their daily activities immediately after their treatment.  You may have some redness but this will fade quickly.

Pigmented areas and vascular lesions will darken and will gradually flake off and fade over the next 7-10 days.

However, we recommend that individuals refrain from any direct sun exposure for 24 – 48 hours. Ensure you wear a high-SPF 30 or 50+ broad spectrum sunscreen for the next few days following your treatment.  Avoid activities that cause excess heat and sweating like exercise or a sauna session. And avoid using skin care products that contain active ingredients for 24 hours.

Risks and complications

Risks and complications are present in any cosmetic treatment patients choose to have, and patients need to understand these factors before going ahead with a treatment. LimeLight IPL has very minimal risks or side effects associated with the treatment compared to other skin enhancement treatments. There may be some redness in the treatment area after your session, but this should subside after a few hours. There are some contraindications for this treatment that, if met, may make some individuals ineligible for a LimeLight treatment, or they may have to wait before undergoing the treatment. Ineligible individuals may identify with the following:

  • Pregnant
  • Open wounds
  • Recent sunburn
  • Active cold sores
  • Currently undergoing radiation treatment
  • Recently had injectables, waxing, or other laser treatments (will need to wait for one to two weeks before having a LimeLight)

The risks of unwanted side effects such as burning, blistering and subsequent scarring with loss of pigmentation, or hyperpigmenation are higher in darker skin types. Great care is taken to minimise these risks via a Fitzpatrick skin type Questionaire, and potentially a “test patch” (which may be required 3-7 days prior to the actual treatment)  to find the correct level of IPL energy for the individual patient.  Majority of patients will be able to proceed with treatment all on the same day.

Expected side effects may include:

  • Slight swelling & Redness, which will settle over 1-2 days
  • Darkening of the pigment, with the skin having a “dirty” appearance or looking like it’s been sprinkled with “Milo” – this will disappear over 7 – 10 days  (DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH – this could cause damage to the skin)
  • Hormonal pigmentation, known as melasma or chloasma, may paradoxically darken after IPL treatment
  • Recurrence of red or brown lesions will occur if the post treatment guidelines are not followed
